Jujutsu Kaisen Character Analysis
Natascha Roever
Suguru Geto is introduced as a character in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, however we aren’t made familiar with him until the hidden inventory/premature death arc (manga chapters 65-79). Even in this short amount of time spent directly in front of the reader Geto has a strong impact on the characters in the series due to his drive to stay true to his own thoughts and conclusions.

In the Hidden Inventory arc of the manga Geto is shown to be a well-rounded character and someone who stands strongly in their beliefs. Geto puts a heavy focus on morality and ethics, often fighting with Gojo over moral arguments. The first we see is after they had gotten in trouble for not putting up a veil before exercising the curse to save Utahime and Mei Mei. Gojo doesn’t care if non-sorcerers can see what they do, since he doesn’t find anything fun or useful in protecting the weak. Geto makes his counter argument calmly and matter-of-factly telling Gojo that what they do, Jujutsu sorcery, exists to protect those who cannot protect themselves. However, after their encounter with Toji Fushiguro and the Star Religious Group, Geto sees a strong divide between the non-sorcerer world and the world where he is living.
Geto understands that curses are the common denominator and the way to “fix” the problems of Jujutsu society would be to get rid of the things that’s producing the curses, non-sorcerers – people who can’t control their cursed energy. He harbors a hatred for non-sorcerers and wallows in it by himself and grasps the difficulty of those feelings and what that would mean in practice. During his talk with Yuki Tsukumo, Geto shares his true feelings asking, “Then why not just kill every non-jujutsu sorcerer?” then after realizing what he said is shocked by two things, one that he voiced it allowed, but also that Yuki accepted his idea as a possibility.

After this conversation and the death of Haibara, Geto is sent on a mission to a village in the country side of Japan where two little girls have been accused of cursing the village. They are in a cage; the village had been keeping them there to stop them from cursing the village. Geto realizes the situation that he is in and it’s the tipping point for all the other things that he’s been thinking about for so long. He kills the village, all 112 people, taking the twin girls with him. By doing this he abandons everything else to pursue his own goals. This also shows the choice that he’s made to view non-sorcerers as “monkeys” that spawn curses.

In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequal to the main story of Jujutsu Kaisen, Geto is established as a leader of a group that is opposing the general jujutsu society. He eve n arrives on the Jujutsu Tech campus to declare war against jujutsu society, in the form of the hundred demons’ night parade, in order to capture Yuta’s curse – Rika – for this group. In this story it is shown to us how strong his dislike for non-jujutsu sorcerers or people with no cursed energy is. His dismissal of Ms. Saito instead calling her “Sato” because it’s “better” was because she was a non-sorcerer and he believed she was inferior to him. As well as, spraying disinfecting deodorant on himself after the meeting since he didn’t want the “stench” of a non-sorcerer to get anywhere else. These actions show the more casual side of his character and beliefs.

His true feelings are always clear and he does little to hide his true thoughts and feelings from those he does talk to. Even in his last moments he stands with his thoughts and does not waiver from his idea of what is right and makes sure to tell Gojo that. Showing that his character hasn’t changed even through time, hardship, and death.
